Meaning of Hanuman Chalisa

With the dust of the Guru’s lotus feet, I clean the mirror of my mind and narrate the pure glory of Lord Rama, the bestower of the four fruits of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha).
Knowing myself to be ignorant, I meditate on the son of the wind, Hanuman, who bestows strength, wisdom, and knowledge and removes all my sufferings and impurities.

Victory to Hanuman, the ocean of wisdom and virtue. Victory to the Lord of Monkeys who is well known in all three worlds.
You, the messenger of Ram, are the abode of matchless power. You are also called Anjani’s son and the son of the wind.
O Hanuman! You are a great hero, strong as a thunderbolt. You dispel evil thoughts and are a companion of good sense and wisdom.

Your complexion is golden, and you are adorned with beautiful clothes. You wear earrings and have curly hair.
You have the thunderbolt and the flag in your hands, and the sacred thread made of the Munja grass adorns your shoulder.
You are the reincarnation of Lord Shiva and the son of Kesari. Your luster and fame are praised by the whole world.

You are the master of knowledge, virtuous, and highly wise. You are always keen to do the work of Lord Rama.
You delight in listening to the deeds of Lord Rama. You dwell in the hearts of Lord Rama, Lakshman, and Sita.
Disguised as a small monkey, you revealed yourself to Sita. You assumed a formidable form and burnt the city of Lanka.

You assumed an awesome form and destroyed demons, thus accomplishing the task of Lord Rama.
You brought the life-restoring herb and revived Lakshman, and Lord Rama embraced you joyfully.
Lord Rama praised you highly, saying, “You are dear to me like my brother Bharat.”

Thousands of people are singing your glory. Saying this, Lord Rama embraced you.
Sanaka, Sanatana, Lord Brahma, sages, Narad, Goddess Saraswati, and the King of Serpents, all sing your glories.
Yama, Kubera, and the guardians of the four directions, poets and scholars, have not been able to praise you adequately.

You helped Sugriva by introducing him to Lord Rama, thus reinstating him on the throne.
By heeding your advice, Vibhishan became the king of Lanka, which is known throughout the world.
You swallowed the sun, thousands of miles away, considering it to be a sweet fruit.

Carrying Lord Rama’s ring in your mouth, you crossed the ocean with ease, accomplishing the impossible task.
All difficult tasks in the world become easy by your grace.
You are the doorkeeper and protector of Lord Rama’s door. No one can enter without your permission.

Those who take refuge in you enjoy all happiness. You are the protector, and there is no fear.
When you roar, all the three worlds tremble, and no evil spirits can come near.
Evil spirits and ghosts do not come near those who chant the name of Mahavir Hanuman.

All diseases and sufferings are eradicated, and chanting your name continuously brings great strength.
Hanuman saves those who meditate on him, with their mind, body, and actions.
Hanuman, the master of senses, bestows the eight powers and nine treasures to those who remember him.

O Hanuman! You help those who come to you with any desire, and they attain immense fruit of life.
Your fame and glory pervade through all four ages, and your radiance is renowned throughout the world.
You are the protector of saints and sages and the destroyer of demons, O beloved of Lord Rama.

You grant the eight spiritual powers (siddhis) and the nine material riches (nidhis), as bestowed by Mother Janaki.
You hold the essence of devotion to Lord Rama and always remain his humble servant.
By singing your praises, one can find Lord Rama and forget the sufferings of many lifetimes.

At the time of death, one goes to the abode of Lord Rama and is freed from the cycle of rebirth.
One who keeps his mind free from other gods and devotes himself to Hanuman alone finds all happiness.
